The Power of Pause: Linda Penkala’s Journey to Heart and Mind Wellness

For Linda Penkala, a longtime holistic educator, licensed massage therapist, and author, the wake-up call came through her own body. Despite years of helping others find balance, she found herself in the hospital with atrial fibrillation (A Fib), her heart literally calling out for attention.

“I didn’t know the apparent connection between emotional stress and my heart until I ended up in the hospital,” Linda recalls. Though her bloodwork came back fine, she knew something deeper was wrong, something emotional, not just physical.

That moment launched a life-changing journey of research, reflection, and rediscovery.

Searching for Answers

As both a writer and healer, Linda dove into understanding what had gone wrong. What she uncovered was that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer in the world, and in the United States, women are dying from heart disease more than men and more than all cancers combined.

“I realized, even though I help others holistically with their health, I was not doing a stellar job of it myself,” she says. Juggling a blended family of four teenagers, business responsibilities, and her own expectations had left her depleted. She knew it was time to take her own advice to slow down, refocus, and truly pause.

The Turning Point

Linda began what she calls her “deep dive into soul-searching.” She sought medical guidance from her cardiologist and endocrinologist while turning to her faith and holistic practices for emotional healing. “At that junction, I realized that I had not been embracing the wellness lifestyle choices I share with clients,” she says.

So she began walking her own talk, reducing stress, rebuilding balance, and reconnecting to her inner peace through consistent self-care and spiritual grounding. “Teaching these now serves as a welcome reminder to slow down, pay attention, and pause,” she adds.

Empowering Women Through Awareness

When Linda learned just how widespread heart disease was among women, she knew she had to act. “Something needs to be done,” she recalls thinking. “More women need to know this information.”

She launched her Wise Women Heart Health Program, began writing wellness articles, and developed the PEBS acronym to help women remember the unique symptoms of a heart attack that differ from those in men. Her mission became one of education and empowerment, helping women understand not just the risks, but also their power to take charge of their health.

A Lifestyle of Self-Care and Faith

Linda continues to practice the same wellness tools she teaches. Her self-care routine includes monthly massage, chiropractic care, acupuncture, weekly Yin Yoga, and daily meditation and prayer since 2020. These rituals help her maintain balance and mental clarity while keeping her heart strong physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Her book, The Pause to Relax: A Woman’s Guide to Robust Heart Health, shares these insights and practical tools, encouraging women everywhere to view wellness not as a luxury but as a lifelong commitment to themselves.

Living Her Purpose

“The gift given to me is one of encouragement and exhortation from God,” Linda shares. Through her company, Optimum Health for Life, she continues her 38-year mission of guiding others toward healthier, happier, and more mindful living.

Her message is simple but powerful: “Surround yourself with excellent medical care, holistic providers, and a circle of friends. Educate yourself, pay attention daily, and take time to pause and reflect. There are lessons in the journey, be open to receive them, stay alert and positive, and turn to breathwork for immediate calm, wherever you may be.”
