Mental Health Awareness Month: The State of Mental Healthcare Access in Jacksonville
Every May, Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder that the discussion around mental health is not only a once-a-year conversation. It is an every day reality for millions of Americans. In Jacksonville specifically, it is more important than ever to continue to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental illness, while improving access to care.
Hearts 4 Minds is committed to this goal every single day and works tirelessly year-round to help individuals connect with the care they deserve through community initiatives such as H4M Connect, Murals with Meaning, QPR Suicide Prevention Training, and more.
Why Mental Health Awareness Month Is Important
Our mental health impacts how we feel, think, and view the world around us including our relationships and communities.
While Mental Health Awareness Month is in May, mental health awareness should be openly discussed year-round. Consistent awareness helps to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness, encourages early support, and reminds individuals that they are not alone. By highlighting mental health throughout the month of May, the conversation around mental health is amplified and there is greater awareness around the issue. Mental Health Awareness Month allows a greater spotlight on mental health, creating a culture where seeking help is not only accepted, but normalized.
Mental Health Stats in Jacksonville
Mental health is a huge concern in Jacksonville and Duval County. The data shows that:
Around 17% of adults have reported poor mental health for greater than 14 days.
16.2% of adults have been diagnosed with depression.
Approximately 25% of adults in Jacksonville have reported feeling depressed or hopeless.
According to crisis indicators published by the City of Jacksonville, from 2022-2023 there were 628 suicide deaths in Duval County.
From 2016-2023, there have been over 3,300 overdose deaths.
There were more than 8,600 visits to the emergency department related to a mental health crisis.
These stats highlight the prevalence of mental health challenges, but the demand for health services continues to rise, placing a huge strain on local providers to keep up with it. Peer support programs have seen a jump by over 50% year-over-year according to information provided by the Northeast Florida Foundation, consistent with demand seen nationwide.
Barriers to Mental Health Care Access: Why Care Isn’t Always Available
Although there is increased awareness around mental health, many Jacksonville area residents face barriers when trying to access mental health care.
One of the largest challenges is knowing where to go. For those already feeling overwhelmed and struggling, trying to navigate the maze of the mental health care system can be exhausting. The high costs of care and a lack of insurance are also a top barrier. Many providers do not accept Medicaid and certain private health insurance plans only cover limited options. This prevents many individuals from accessing reliable and consistent care.
Even with insurance, many experience delays in accessing care due to long wait times for an appointment (sometime spanning months) and a shortage of medical care providers. For those in a crisis, many are forced to rely on emergency rooms for immediate care, often costing thousands and thousands of dollars. This high cost can be a huge deterrent for accessing much needed help, leaving many to suffer silently.
Sometimes for those who can access community care, transportation struggles can play a role. Underserved populations especially may not have reliable ways to attend appointments.
However, beyond cost and logistics, the stigma around mental health still plays a powerful role and can prevent many from seeking help. While the conversation around mental health has expanded over the years, many individuals still worry about being judged by loved ones or co-workers. This can delay much needed care and can turn challenges into crises.
Groups That Are the Most Impacted
Mental health challenges can impact every single person, but certain groups in Jacksonville are impacted the most, especially when it comes to adequate care. Many of these challenges are driven by income, geography, race, age, and other systemic factors.
Uninsured Duval County residents are at a high risk of limited access to consistent care, especially individuals without reliable transportation for appointments. Additionally, the younger population is also majorly impacted. Over 60% of the youth in Florida experiencing major depressive symptoms often do not receive care. According to the City of Jacksonville, young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 have some of the highest rates of mental health related hospitalizations.
How H4M Connect Is Bridging the Gap
Hearts 4 Minds is addressing these challenges through community solutions to help close the gaps and overcome barriers that prevent access to care. The largest initiative is through H4M Connect, which has been pivotal in connecting residents to care they may not have been able to find otherwise. Throughout the years, Hearts 4 Minds has connected individuals to providers who have been able to help during times of crisis. Every success can mean a life saved. One person has even called H4M Connect as, “the Knot for mental health and a place they could go to find all the information they needed.”
Additionally, Hearts 4 Minds has a huge local presence with our “Murals with Meaning” initiative. These murals are installed at key areas in the Jacksonville region. Each mural includes a QR code that connects people directly to information about mental health and the H4M Connect platform. By meeting people where they are, we believe that the power of the community with the information about mental health can help improve treatment outcomes and expand the opportunities for care throughout Jacksonville and Duval County.
Seeing the Impact: Stories from the Community
Every statistic is a number and there is a person behind every single number. In Jacksonville, Hearts 4 Minds’ mission and the resources provided have been life-changing.
We stay committed to providing individuals and families with resources for mental health care help. The system can be tricky to navigate, but the H4M Connect platform has been life-saving for some. One community member captured the impact of this resource. She is a mom concerned about her adult son and said, “I connected with a very nice woman and spoke with her today. I have an appointment for Sunday, and it worked out fine. You helped connect us to needed resources. Thank you so much.”
This story and many others show what is possible when the barriers are removed and access to much needed care is simplified.
Opportunities For Improving Access and What’s Next For Hearts 4 Minds
To continue to improve access to mental healthcare access, community collaboration will be needed to implement solutions.
We need to better support and allow psychiatric nurse practitioners to operate more autonomously than they currently do. By allowing these professionals to work more freely, this will open up more capacity and appointments, reducing wait times and overall improving access to care.
Furthermore, continued community education is a crucial piece of the puzzle. When individuals understand the symptoms of mental health challenges and know the resources to get help for themselves or a loved one, support can be gained before a challenge reaches a breaking point.
Hearts 4 Minds is developing online, accessible education modules to help ensure people understand signs and symptoms of mental health challenges to empower people with the proper knowledge and resources.
Mental Health Awareness month puts a spotlight on mental health, but mental health awareness is a year-long effort. Hearts 4 Minds continues to stay committed to raising awareness and improve access in Jacksonville to build a future where mental health care is accessible for everyone. No one should have to navigate it alone.
